In our lesson on the role of a webmaster, we emphasized that a core focus of webmasters is to manage and increase web presence and website profitability on the world wide web. In this lesson and over the next few lessons, we will cover the most widely used and best methods and techniques webmasters may utilize for increasing profitability of their websites.

1. Search engine optimization

Search engine optimization or SEO is a well-known and most widely used marketing strategy for promoting a website on the world wide web. SEO refers to the promotion of a webpage to the higher ranks (typically first page) of any search engine results returned by a search engine to a web user conducting a search on the web.

A highly ranked website on the search engine results pages corresponds to increased web traffic for the website.

2. Social media marketing

Social media marketing is a method of online marketing that uses social media networks to promote a website, where the site owner (or in many cases, the webmaster) engages with its audience through such networks. Larger networks include Twitter, Facebook and Digg.

3. Online advertising

Online advertising can be done in a number of ways including:

  • advertising on search engine results pages and websites such as Google’s Adwords advertising platform;
  • direct advertising on websites that attract the appropriate target audience;
  • advertising on mobile applications;
  • advertising on social media marketing networks e.g. Facebook page advertising.

4. Email marketing

While not directly an online marketing strategy, collection of email addresses is usually conducted through online methods, including having a subscription form on the website or on a landing page that is created for the primary purpose of collecting email addresses. Promotions, special offers and discount coupons may then be offered through newsletter mail-outs.

5. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing involves recruiting affiliates (agents) to promote the website. Usually, affiliates conduct product or service reviews and provide a link to the website to enable potential customers to click on the link in the hope of purchasing products or services offered by the website.

6. Promotional marketing

Promotional marketing covers article marketing, press releases, listings on review sites, listings in directories and other forms of promotional marketing that may be conducted online.
